Mix projects and ExUnit

Open a Mix project and run focused tests with native results.

On this page

Open a project#

Open the directory containing mix.exs. For umbrella applications, open the umbrella root so child applications and their relationships are visible. Configure a compatible Elixir/Erlang SDK pair and fetch dependencies using the project’s normal Mix workflow.

Wait for indexing. Use completion for a module name and Go to Declaration on a dependency function to check source or decompiled BEAM navigation. Decompiled declarations aid navigation but are not a substitute for the dependency’s original source.

Run a task#

Create a Mix run configuration under Run → Edit Configurations. Select the working directory, SDK, task, arguments, and environment. Run a build task and click a compiler location in the output to navigate back to source. The plugin also provides Elixir-script, IEx, IEx with Mix, and release configurations for their respective workflows.

Run ExUnit tests#

Use a test gutter action or a mix test configuration for a file, test, or directory. Results appear in the IDE test runner. Navigate from a failure to its source, inspect the assertion, then rerun the focused test or failed set.

Compare task arguments and environment with a terminal run when behavior differs. In umbrellas, ensure the test configuration targets the intended application rather than another child app.
